Diet Eating

Diet eating is very prevalent throughout the world. With the increased incidence of obesity, more and more people are going on diets in an attempt to lose weight.

Diet eating consists of any type of eating that is done with the goal of losing weight. Therefore, it includes any participation in a:

  • Commercial weight loss program (e.g., Weight Watchers, NutriSystem, Jenny Craig, eDiets, Optifast, LA Weight Loss).
  • Medical supervised weight loss program (e.g., Optifast, Health Management Resources, Medifast).
  • Self-help weight loss program (e.g., Overeaters Anonymous, Take Off Pounds Sensibly).
  • Book-based diet (e.g., Atkins, Zone, South Beach, You: On A Diet).
  • Consuming diet eating food (e.g., manufactured food with artificially low calories or fat).
  • Any other unnatural food restrictions prescribed by some external source (e.g., family, friends, physician).

Here's the problem - diet eating doesn't work. Research study after research study have shown that 95% of diet eating efforts fail. Diet eating might lead to short-term weight loss but 95% of the time dieters gain back any lost weight - often overshooting where they started.

As one example, a study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine found almost no evidence that commercial weight loss programs which prescribe diet eating are effective in helping people drop excess pounds. Few rigorous studies of these programs have been carried out, and federal officials say that companies are often unwilling to conduct such studies, arguing that they are in the business of treatment, not research. You can read a New York Times summary of this study at: Diet and Lose Weight? Scientist Say 'Prove It!'
